Curacao is in the Dutch Antilles (now called Netherlands Antilles). It's an island off the coast of Venezuela, in South America. She moved to Holland and did her training and Olympic swimming for that nation.

I know, right? We know swimming makes you smarter, but it may have played a part in Andrew Young's (among other people--wait and see!)'s greatness. I wonder what that connection is?

I like that one! Is that really where the term "Underground Railroad" came from? Interesting!

I like the idea of replacing the fears and disempowering legends with true stories of swimming greatness. I'm looking forward to reading more of them.

Erroll,

As far as I know, yes, the current aquatic director at Hampton said that saran wrap under a swim cap worked for her students. My daughter tried it in her job as a swim teacher, and her hair stayed mostly dry. I have thought about trying it myself, but I'm not really scared of getting my hair wet. Maybe for the sake of science. . .

Interesting! Is the current Aquatics Director at HU advocating the use of saran wrap? If yes, how is it used and the value? Would you use saran wrap at a public pool? Just asking.

Hi Angie,

I will be brief. The situations you described above are very real, and it befuddles me how some Black folks will continue to set low limits for themselves and not explore options when it comes to swimming. Regarding your 5 top reasons why blacks don't swim, I will say these are all excuses, not reasons. I can nit pick the excuses if I so choose, but it is not worth doing. I would much rather see Brothers & Sisters step it up and take ownership and responsibility for their life. Swimming is important. Ignorance of swimming never saved anyone from drowning, and folks have not learned the lesson.

Please do not take my comments personally, I am sure these were not YOUR reasons, but rather a report on what has been said by others.

Keep it up. You are reaching out the right way. And bring your forum to Diversity In Aquatics. It is also needed there (the more educated need to know, too!). Thanks for all you do.
