I admire your early morning, away-from-the-house exercise. That's not always easy to manage. And I like your balanced attitude as well!

I have been making sure I walk most days. That's about what I can handle at the moment, but it sure does make a difference to my physical and mental well-being.

Nice post!

Thank you Chris! I think drown proofing is an amazing concept. Good for you and training your 3 year old. You won't regret it. My 16 year old started that young and was winning ribbons by 8. My 11 and 9 year olds also started around 3, and they both swim well now.

Now it's time to put my 3 year old in lessons!

Thanks for this! I checked it out. Twenty years ago, I completed Airborne school and Air Assault school. This makes that looks sooooo easy.

I learned to swim about 4 months ago at the age of 41. I wold love someday to be able to pass this drownproofing test.

My 3-year-old son will be able to pass it. He's in YMCA swim classes now. I'm building a lifeguard.

I am a subscriber and reader of your blog. Keep it up!

Bad hair and physically demanding exercise could hardly be serious issues with enough substance to stop youth who are sincerely interested in sports.

Helmet hair and exercise that is so strenuous that it causes shoulders to droop for the rest of your life, are the bedrocks of football.

Thank God, everybody is not cut out to be an athlete or swim competitively. We all should endeavor to learn water safety and how to save ourselves and, at least one other person in case of an emergency.

As a certified YMCA Swim Instructor with coaching experience, too, I think you need to have both learn to swim and competitive swim programs. But the same people do not have to provide the teaching or coaching for both programs. Also, bridges between lessons and swim team, such as a longer class with more participants who are all at the same very advanced beginner level, similar age groups, working on starts, turns and all 4 strokes, for all but the most precocious swimmer. Some people don't want to compete. But you have to have the swim team speeders, very few of whom will ever make the Olympics, as a gold standard for everyone. Synchronized Swim and Water Polo are also Olympic sports with different goals but have a bonus of participants' relative water safety resulting from getting good at either of those as well!

I agree! We have been blessed with friends who have a backyard pool that they have invited us to enjoy regularly. That is how our kids learned to swim and feel comfortable in the water. It's wonderful.

It would be nice to have our own, but I'm not sure where we'd put it. So this is a nice compromise.
